The perineurium
WebbE. Each bundle of nerve fibers is surrounded by the perineurium, which consists primarily of several layers of epithelioid cells. Tight junctions between these cells exclude most macromolecules. The external coat of nerves, the epineurium, surrounds many fascicles but does not exclude macromolecules. WebbThe main function of perineurium is to provide mechanical support, while the endoneurium supports the exchange between two sides. The perineurium forms about seven to eight concentric lamellar layer around the fascicle in which every layer consist one fibroblastic cell. The basal lamina covers every layer, on which myofibroblasts resides.

Find, read and cite all the research ... WebbWithin the nerve, axons are further bundled into fascicles, which are each surrounded by their own layer of fibrous connective tissue called perineurium. Finally, individual axons are surrounded by loose connective tissue called the endoneurium (Figure 13.21). These three layers are similar to the connective tissue sheaths for muscles.

The disruption of that delicate innermost perineurium layer could, however (at least theoretically), result in true intrafascicular spread.
